En Primeur Wine Buying Guide and FAQs

En Primeur Explained..

En Primeur (or Wine Futures) is the process of buying wines prior to them being bottled and released for general sale. The 'En Primeur' wines are purchased 'under bond' therfore being exclusive of Duty and VAT at this stage. The wines are usually shipped around 1 year after our offer (and 2 years after the vintage).

How does En Primeur work?

Firstly, to give you a time frame of the process, use the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape as an example..
The harvest was late September 2012. We first offered the wines En Primeur in December 2013 & these wines will be delivered in the Autumn of 2014.

On arrival in the UK the wines will be stored, under bond, on your behalf and you told of their arrival and asked for any further delivery instructions.

All En Primeur purchases are Ex-Vat and Ex-Duty. If/when you choose to have the wines delivered then duty and VAT at the rates applicable at the time will apply and you will recieve an additional invoice from us for this.

En Primeur Wine Buying Guide and FAQs

Why buy "En Primeur"?
Our En Primeur price is almost always cheaper than the future price of the wine once it becomes 'physical'. It is also the only way to secure our most sought after wines.

What exactly do I pay?
The 'En Primeur'price includes the shipping cost but NOT Duty and VAT. Once the wines arrive in the UK, Duty and VAT can be deferred further if the wine is stored 'in bond' in a registered bonded warehouse but then you have storage charges (with us, this is currently £10 + vat per case per year)

What is the cost of duty on Wine?
£2.049 per 75cl bottle of still wine.
£2.625 per 75cl bottle of sparkling wine.
£2.732 per 75cl bottle of Port wine

UK VAT = 20%  (applied to the winecost and the duty cost)
Rates are subject to change by the government at any time.

What does "In Bond" mean?
When the wines finally arrive to us in the UK, they come into our 'In Bond' account with London City Bond. This means that no UK duty or VAT has been paid on the wine. If you request the wine to be delivered to you (anywhere in the EU) then duty and VAT will be payable by you in addition to the price. You can keep the wine 'In Bond' with us at a cost of £10 + vat per case per year.
