Chateau La Grange Cochard

Busy hands are at work in the sleepy hamlet of Villie-Morgon in Beaujolais. Here, the historic and imposing Chateau La Grange Cochard and it's enviable plots of old vines (including 1.5ha in Py) have been brought back to life.

The estate has been given a new lease of life in 2008 by James and Sarah Wilding, who set about restoring the building and winery including the purchase of several old foudre and used barriques from Chateau de Jacques.

Morgon is arguably the finest ‘cru’ in Beaujolais, certainly when it come to the ability of the wines to age. Within the cru lies an extinct volcano with its crushed blue granite soils. This gently rising peak is known as Py, which can produce some of the longest-lived wines of the region. Traditionally the wines of the village are vinified quickly, but here a slower, gentler fermentation is preferred which brings out the individual character of the various vineyard plots.

Chateau La Grange Cochard produce three cuvees: a Vieille Vigne, which is aged in those old oak foudre and two lieu-dits, Les Charmes and Le Py. The Vieille Vigne is sumptuous and elegant with silky tannins. The two cru's are quite different, the feminine, perfumed Charmes and the more powerful, age worthy Py. All three wines possess wonderful aromatics and a deep rich colour.

The efforts of James, Sarah and their family can be seen in the lovely 2009's.This is the start of a journey and there is little doubt that this is an estate very much in ascendency. We are thrilled to offer you their wines.
