Tasting Notes:

The cream of the lineup, and possibly the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre is an incredible effort that possesses notions of bouquet garni, pepper, licorice, cassis and crushed stone-like minerality. Full-bodied, powerful and layered, yet also elegant and with terrific intensity and depth, it too should be reasonably approachable in its youth and evolve gracefully for 15 years or more. If you can, don’t miss a chance to latch on to a few of these. Drink 2015-2027.

This is a terrific lineup of wines by the brother and sister team of Marie and Francois Giraud. Their 2011s are certainly near the top of the vintage, with the 2012s looking just as good. In addition to releasing stunning reds, this estate always produces a terrific white. Marie produced three red Chateauneufs in 2012, with no Les Gallimardes due to the tiny quantity. During my tasting, Marie commented on the rain in late September and the difficulty in deciding when to pick. Opting to wait until after the rain for the majority of their plots, this spread the harvest out over five weeks as opposed to the normal two weeks.

The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape les Grenaches de Pierre is in the top 5-10 wines in the vintage. Coming from a single plot of sandy soils in La Crau and made from 100% Grenache, it knocks it out of the park with its black raspberry, cassis, lavender, licorice and smoked earth-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and elegant, it has awesome purity, no hard edges and building tannin. It’s already hard to resist, but will drink nicely through 2027.

One of my favorite estates, Marie and Francois Giraud burst onto the scene in 2001 when they took over the running of the estate from their parents. Since then, and with help from consultant Philippe Cambie, it’s been one superb set of releases after another. Looking at the 2012s, these both (there’s no Gallimardes in 2012) perfumed beautifully. This vintage was compared to fresher 2009 by Marie, with the wines showing slightly more acidity and less alcohol. The 2013s make the most of the vintage, without a doubt, and are up with the top wines. Wine Advocate #215, Oct 2014, Jeb Dunnuck, (95), Drink: 2015 - 2027

"Brilliant oenologist, Philippe Cambie, has completely resurrected this estate, where he is now turning out some of the most extraordinary wines of the appellation, with the old vine Les Grenaches de Pierre an outstanding clone of Rayas. That's not surprising in view of the fact that it comes from the pure sandy soils near Rayas. The traditional cuvee is aged in tank and old barrels, and represents a blend of 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 5% Mourvedre. Les Gallimardes, also kept in tank and old barrels, is a combination of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Les Grenaches de Pierre is 100% old vine Grenache also aged in old barrels and tank."-Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.

"Domaine Giraud is one of the most exciting domaines in Chateauneuf du Pape" - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.
